Day 1: Let's get Started 

It's day 1 of your quest for less, and I'm so excited to help you get started!

Today we will chat about my favorite long-term decluttering strategies. There is a tendency to feel overwhelmed when taking on any new journey, and I'm here to help you along.

Before we dive into that, I invite you to consider re-writing the word overwhelm. A wise friend shared with me that she re-wrote this story of overwhelm in her life by looking at it in a different way. Instead of telling herself, “I am so overwhelmed” she replaced it with “I am highly in demand right now.” The new verbiage alone, should evoke a different kind of emotion for you. I hope that you take this along with you for the next 7 days, and beyond.

Ok! You might be asking yourself a bunch of questions right now…

Where do I start? What if I fall back into old patterns? What if I feel “highly in demand” all the time?

Well fear not friend, we are in this together and I'm here to support you every step of the way! Not only will I be sharing my top tips about sustaining your new minimalist approach, but today you will get to tackle some pieces of your closet, and get yourself feeling great! You will be taking your first baby-step today, and dipping your toe in the water. By day seven, you'll be ready to dive in!

Today's Quest is to choose 5 or more categories from this list to declutter! If you feel inspired, tackle all of the categories!

Alrighty, let's talk about those strategies now.

How do we make it so that our efforts in this quest are long-lasting, and don't lead us down the path to old habits of the past?

My first tip is to write down why your minimalist approach to life is important to you. When you write down your goals, you affirm and solidify them... you make them real. You are establishing your real intentions, and creating the life you want and deserve.

What would your life would look like if you continued with a more minimalistic mindset?

Write down what that looks like.

What would your life look like if you did nothing, and continued your old habits?

Write that down too. Now, I have an extra challenge for you! Once you are finished writing this down, snap a photo of it, and save it as the wallpaper on your phone for the next 7 days, as a reminder of why you are committing to this. I'd also recommend tossing the paper when you're done... you know, less clutter. ;)

The next tip, and I think maybe one of the most important for long term success, is to be mindful about what you bring into your home. Throughout this journey, most of your focus will be on what you are removing from your space. It's important to note that what you bring into your space should be carefully, and mindfully thought through.

I've given myself a rule to let go of two items, each time I bring in one item to my home. It used to be much more, (let go of 10 for every 1) but we are very near where we want to be with our possessions. Find a rule that works for you right now. When you're out and about, shopping online or with friends, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I absolutely need this?

  • Do I want vs need this?

  • If I bring this home, which items will I be letting go of?

  • Do I have something similar I can use in place of this?

  • Must I have this right now, or can I wait a week to consider this purchase?

Minimalism isn't about perfection, but it is about being mindful, and carefully considering the items we want to share space with us.

Remember that your home is a living space, and not a storage space!
