Juniper Berry

Extracted from the berries of a coniferous tree, Juniper Berry essential oil is recognized for its versatile uses and benefits. The scent of Juniper Berry oil is woody, spicy, and clean. The common juniper, Juniperus communis, is an evergreen conifer tree that can grow up to 10 meters high and can live for as long as 200 years. The tree also produces male and female flowers. The male flowers are small and yellow and grow near the tip of the twigs whereas the female flowers are green and eventually evolve into the purple fruit of the tree. An even more interesting question to ask, would be, "Why do so many successful people suffer?" If you want to stop suffering, you need to decide there is no longer room for it in your life. Make the decision that life is too short to suffer, and commit to only living in a beautiful state. Did you know when you negotiate with yourself, that you are actually stripping yourself of power?

Let's have a quick chat about your brain. Your brain, as beautiful as it is... is not designed to make you happy. It is designed to protect you, to keep you safe, it is designed as a form of survival. Because the brain wants to live in a state of survival mode, it is constantly looking for what is *wrong*. This is your Fight or Flight survival software... and it's time to go in like an expert hacker and hijack the crap out of your brain. Last time I checked... you weren't being chased by Lions on the regular, so it's time to upgrade your software!

We at least need to be able to notice when our survival software is running, so that we can step out of it when it's necessary. Something else to note, since we aren't being chased by lions, and tigers, and bears (oh my!), the new normal "dangers" that we are running from are thoughts... yes thoughts! Be honest, have you ever thought any of these?

  • What are they thinking of me?

  • Do I have enough money?

  • Am I doing well by my children?

  • What's wrong with me?

  • Am I enough?

It's a relief to know that these thoughts aren't yours alone... but knowing this isn't going to shift anything. More important to know and understand... What are your favorite flavors of suffering? Anger? Worry? Frustration? Resentment? Overwhelm? Stress? Loneliness? Depression? Sadness? If you can identify your favorite flavors of suffering you are able to better hijack your own software. It's important to realize that suffering begets more suffering (just as happiness begets more happiness!) and our goal is to stop the suffering as it arises.

What is *wrong* is always available, and so is what is right. It is all about what we choose to focus on. Take control of your mind so that your spirit, soul, and emotions can soar! ⠀

I wanted to share a couple fun DIY recipes with you for a day of self care and pampering. Peppermint Facial

Peppermint Facial Mask

Ingredients

-1 egg

-1 tsp Jojoba oil

-1 to 2 drops doTERRA Peppermint

Instructions

-Beat the egg with a whisk or a fork. and then mix in jojoba oil, and peppermint.

-Use your fingers to lightly apply the mixture to the face, avoiding your eyes and surrounding area.

-Leave on the mask for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with cool water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Lavender Foot Bath

Ingredients

-Large bowl or basin for soaking your feet

-warm water

-1 tsp powdered milk

-3 to 5 drops doTERRA Lavender

-dried or fresh flowers

-crystals of your choice

Instructions

-Fill a basin big enough for hands or your feet with warm water

-Mix powdered milk and essential oil together in a small dish.

-Add mixture to the water basin and stir

-Add in any fresh or dried flowers, or crystals

-Soak tootsies for 10-15 minutes, or longer if you just cant get enough!

Essential Oils & Tips for Healthy Hair

One of the biggest compliments I receive all the time is how healthy and beautiful my hair is. I won’t lie, I have been gifted with wonderfully thick hair, but it definitely doesn’t stay fabulous with out a little support! Years ago I thought this meant putting a ton of product in my hair... which couldn’t be further from the truth! So today I wanted to share some of my tips to keep your locks looking luxurious and feeling fab!

1. Get yourself a Quality Shampoo & Conditioner

As I’m sure you can guess, I use an amazing duo that keeps my hair clean and soft, from dōTERRA! doTERRA Salon Essentials Protecting Shampoo and Smoothing Conditioner is a hair-boosting duo that works to protect your scalp and hair while enriching it with doTERRA essential oils, giving your hair the healthy and smooth look it deserves. Keep in mind, these are just suggestions and this is exactly how I take care of my hair!

2. STOP washing your hair every day

Ok, ok, hear me out! When you wash your hair every day, you throw off the natural balance of your scalp and your hair. Plus, it is so much better for your hair to rest from heat, products, and washing! Which brings me to my next tip...

3. Lay off the heat

If you’re curling your hair, blowing it out, or straightening it on a daily basis, you’re doing your hair a disservice babe! One of my favorite ways to get waves and curls without heat is by braiding my hair after showering or taking a bath. If you do need your hair styled for an event or a date, then go for it! I do recommend getting creative with no heat options though! You might be surprised what you can dream up! Rag curls anyone? Whether you like to curl, straighten, blow dry, or style your hair, heat can take a serious toll on your strands. If you still plan to use these hot styling tools during your daily hairstyling routine, it is a good idea to use some sort of protecting product to shield your lovely locks from heat damage. Instead of buying a pricey protectant spray, consider making your own with this Essential Oil Heat Protectant Spray that uses essential oils like Clary Sage and Geranium to protect your hair. Not only will this DIY spray keep your hair safe from the heat, but it will leave your strands with a wonderful smell all day long.   

4. Minimize or Eliminate piling on Product

It might not surprise you if you’re still reading, that I don’t use hair spray. If I do use “styling products” it’s very rare and I use very little of it. My product of choice is doTERRA’s Healthy Hold Glaze. You can even add a little of the glaze in a spray bottle with some water if you are looking for a light hold hair spray! However, there’s really something that just feels so good about allowing your hair to be free. Now I understand not every hair type can fall into this all the time, but I’ll tell you this, the more you allow your hair to naturally find itself, the healthier it will feel, better it will look, and easier it will be to manage. 

5. Keep your hair Moisturized

How can we do this? The most important way is to stay hydrated dear! Make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and hair healthy. You can also add a bit of doTERRA’s Beautiful Body Mist for a little shine and hydration if your curls, or ends are feeling particularly dry. One of my favorite ways to keep my hair moisturized is by leaving my conditioner in my hair for the entire duration of my bath or shower, and letting that be the last thing I rinse off.

6. Take your Omegas

Healthy fats keep your hair healthy! That means making sure you are consuming healthy fats in your diet regularly (think avocados!) and adding in a high quality supplement like xEO-Mega from the Lifelong Vitality pack. When you consume healthy fats, not only are you helping to restore what your body may be missing, but you will find that shine again in your hair! It really makes a difference!

7. Retire your Top Knot

Take a deep breath, I don’t mean forever! As a mom, sometimes I have those days where a top knot is all I can manage, and rock my hot mess look. Why retire the top knot? Well, if it tends to be a style you wear the majority of the time, you might be breaking your hair and creating those split ends. Having your hair in a ponytail or top knot can cause extra breakage in your hair, which also causes that no fun frizz! So take another deep breath, take out the hair tie, and let your hair down babe! (Life Hack: if you must have your hair up for longer periods of time, use a satin scrunchi and don’t tie your hair up super tight!)

8. Make your own Deep conditioning Treatment

Instead of shelling out big bucks for fancy deep conditioners, try using essential oils for hair repair with this easy Natural Deep Conditioner DIY. When dealing with damaged, dry hair, get a little extra help with some of the best hair oils like LavenderPeppermintRosemaryClary Sage, and Geranium oil to rejuvenate and repair your lackluster locks. 9. Protect your Hair with Ylang Ylang

Don’t let the damaging heat of the sun prevent your hair from looking healthy and strong. Instead, use Ylang Ylang essential oil. To protect your hair from looking beat by the summer heat, or to restore any sort of damage from heating tools, massage Ylang Ylang into your scalp to increase the appearance of healthy, shiny hair.

10. Be gentle to your hair

Ok, this might sound like a no brainer, but I figured I needed to say it. If your hair is being *knotty* don’t yank your brush or comb through it! Instead, take a more gentle approach to avoid any damage. Check out this easy Natural Hair Detangler DIY that allows you to use soft, moisturizing essential oils to detangle your snarly, troublesome hair. I know how frustrating it can be to get knots out, as my hair is incredibly thick and sometimes has a plan of it’s own!

Establishing Healthy Boundaries

I need to share something that has been on my mind for a while... something in the world that needs to be healed. Our boundaries. In this beautiful world today, we have access to so much with our technology. I remember when I was a kid, before we had caller ID and voicemail, and I also remember that time of boundaries. I vividly remember my mom sharing with me that my friends weren’t allowed to contact me after 9pm. At the time I thought it was strange, but I’m so grateful she instilled this in me.

As an entrepreneur, sometimes we have the tendency or compulsion, to be available to everyone at all times. We ask ourselves ridiculous questions like, “What if it’s an important message?” or something like, “What if I’m missing out on a new customer?” or even worse, “What if I’m letting someone down?” I have thought all of this and so much more, and have had my fair share of apologies to my family for “having to” run off to another room for a quick call. Don’t get it twisted though, all of those moments were choices. ⠀ ⠀

Why are we choosing to allow our technology to dictate our actions? I’m of the mindset now that the “Do not disturb” feature is my new best friend. Re-writing your boundaries isn’t going to be easy, but I can tell you it will be worth it. Give yourself a little grace and TLC by deciding on a time when you’ll respond to your messages. Break out of the compulsions and craziness, and get back to communicating in a way that lights up your soul. ⠀ ⠀

My Dream Reading Space!

If you didn't hear... my hubby and I just bought our dream home, and we will be moving back to Colorado next month! Since I have been so excited about creating a home in our new place, pinning ideas like crazy, and overall just downright excited, I figured I would share some of the things I have been dreaming up lately! I absolutely love to read, and so I wanted to share what my dream reading space would look like! I'm still trying to figure out exactly where this will be, but I'm super thrilled to be sharing with you!

As a book lover and avid reader, I have dreamt of creating this perfect space, forerver! Of course there are little "must-haves" that I absolutely need in this space, like my crystals, a diffuser, my oils of course, snuggly blankets, cozy pillows, and a fantastic rug! Among those things are furniture too, and I've always struggled with deciding between a comfy couch or a little reading nook that is recessed into the wall.

In any case, in my quest for the perfect pieces online, I came across Arhaus! They have a variety of beautiful home decor, and I completely fell head over heels for some of their pieces!

One of the pieces I have really fallen in love with, is the Athens Library in French White. With its vintage silhouettes and artisan-applied finishes, our Athens collection will infuse your space with the ambiance and sophisticated charm of an old English library. It is so beautiful, and it totally reminds me of Disney's Beauty and the Beast when Belle goes to borrow her favorite book again!

When I was browsing around the Arhaus lighting collection, I found so many gorgeous pieces that I really just drooled over. The Vivienne Chandelier totally stole my heart with it's light, playful take on traditional chandelier designs, Vivienne strikes a delicate balance between a rustic iron frame and hand-painted wood beads. Isn't it absolutely breathtaking?

I also really fell in love with the coziness of some of their designs. When I read, I want to feel cozy, and completely immerse myself into the words on the pages. I found so many pieces that would fit perfectly into my dream reading space, and I cannot wait to get to work on that once we are all moved into our new home! Improve your Diet

  • Don’t skip meals. When you skip a meal, your body goes into “survival” mode, slowing your metabolism and storing excess food or glucose as fat. Instead, consider a meal replacement to reduce hunger and provide needed nutrients.
  • Choosing water over sugar-sweetened beverages can aid in maintaining a healthy weight. Substituting water for one 20-ounce sugar-sweetened soda will save you about 240 calories.
  • Focus on nding a balance between hungry and full. Stop eating when you are no longer hungry, not when you are full. To help, try decreasing portion size by using a child-size plate.
  • Don’t make the mistake of trying to change everything overnight. Decrease or replace one unhealthy food item at a time. For example, if you like chips, switch to baked or multigrain.
  • For a simpler approach to making healthy choices, think of your diet in terms of color, variety, and freshness.

Exercise

Exercise does more than just burn calories. It can positively in uence many components of health, including body chemistry and physiology. Proper exercise expends calories during and after activity, promotes better sleep, decreases cravings for unhealthy food, and can even elevate cognitive function.

To achieve a well-rounded tness routine, incorporate aerobic, strength, and exibility training into your exercise each week.

Aerobic Training

Recommended: 5 days a week

Exercise that uses large muscle groups and increases heart rate

Low intensity: walking Moderate intensity: jogging High intensity: sprinting

TIP: Aim for 150 minutes of low to moderate intensity or 75 minutes of high intensity aerobic exercise each week.

Strength Training

Recommended: 2 days a week

Exercise that focuses on speci c muscle groups Gym: free weights, resistance machines, pull-ups

Home: push-ups, abdominal crunches, leg squats, resistance bands

TIP: Strength training will help maintain muscle mass during weight loss; strive to work all major muscle groups for approximately 45 minutes each week.

Flexibility Training

Recommended: 7 days a week

Increase blood ow to muscles and prevent injury Static Stretching: holding a stretch for 20–60 seconds

Dynamic Stretching: repeated, controlled muscle movements (arm circles, walking lunges)

Tips for reducing stress:
  • Know your limits. Taking on more than you can handle increases stress.
  • Work on time management. Create a plan for daily activities and tasks to eliminate pressure and create a sense of accomplishment.
  • Generate a support system. Share your responsibilities or your feelings with others.
  • Set aside time to relax. Find healthy ways to respond to stress by scheduling time for you.

Creating New Habits

When were are transitioning into a healthier lifestyle, sometimes creating new habits can be a bit daunting. We think about all of the things we are leaving behind, maybe hang on a little to tightly to the past, and have a hard time being consistent with our new habits. Before we jump in, remember that you don't have to be perfect. You are taking care of yourself and that also means your journey doesn't have to look a certain way to be successful.

Creating new habits doesn't have to be a scary task, in fact, I would encourage you to make this the most fun and exciting thing you do today! Find something that you love, and focus on that! What do I mean by this? Take a look...

Food Habits

  • When it comes to creating healthier habits in the realm of food, don't focus on the foods you aren't eating! Focus on a specific food, that you love and enjoy! I freaking love avocados, so if I add that to a dish, I know that I'm going to get to savor the experience, since it has a food that I love!

Exercise Habits

  • Don't force yourself to do exercise that you hate. Try new things to figure out what your style is. Maybe you are super into running but not much a fan of yoga. Maybe you hate running, and Tai Chi is totally your thing. Maybe you love weights but hate cardio. Whatever the case, focus on an activity you LOVE so that you want to keep doing it!

Oil Habits

  • Use oils that you LOVE! I will be honest, there are a few oils that when I smelled them at first, I wasn't a fan. Over time however, the aroma changed for me and I'm able to love them! Find a way to incorporate the oils you love into your daily routine. Love Lemon? Add it to your diffuser, and to your glass of water in the morning to start your day feeling refreshed! Get creative, and make your habits FUN!

Detox Habits

Self Care Habits

  • If you don't enjoy writing in a journal, maybe try using the voice to text feature on your phone, or record yourself as an audio journal! Try everything and find what you love. Use your oils with meditation, or in the bath! In order to find what lights you up, (which will keep you on track) you need to try new things!

You can do this. You can totally follow through and stick to the new habits you create, if you focus on the aspects of those habits that you love!

Journal Prompts for Self Discovery

Do you like to journal? Have you made it one of your goals this year to do more journaling? I know that writing consistently in a journal is something I have struggled with in the past, but I made a point to really commit to it last year. I can't even begin to tell you the massive growth and discoveries since then, only that I totally want this for you too! Today I'm going to share some of my favorite journaling prompts to help you get the wheels turning and help you get writing!

Outside of prompts, a great journaling practice to have is gratitude! Writing down at least 5 things daily that you are grateful for, puts you in the space to receive more to be grateful for! So soak up that gratitude and let it fill you up on a daily basis! Celebrate your wins regularly, even if they are tiny. (Trust me, getting the dishes done is a big win!)

With that, here are your prompts. Take your time with these. You don't need to answer them all at once, or even at all! Let them inspire you to start writing, and then keep going. Your intuition has so much more to show you. Once you get started, don't think about it, jus write what comes to you!

  • What books have I read that made a positive impact in my life?
  • What meditations/affirmations did I listen to that empowered me? How do I feel after having listened to them?
  • Am I waiting for somebody to inspire me or do I inspire myself? What do I admire in the people that inspire me? What do I learn from them?
  • What do I want to learn in 2018?
  • How do I feel loved? How do I show love to my friends, family, and my partner? What do I love about myself? What do I want to grow? How do I practice self love?
  • Who do I need to forgive? Have I forgiven myself? How do I practice forgiveness? (Take time to forgive and let go now)
  • What goals do I have regarding family, love, and friendship in 2018?
  • What can I do to make my relationships more fulfilling?

Again, let these inspire you. Find time for yourself in the morning or in the evening (I do both!) to sit down and be intentional with your journaling. You never know what you might discover!

Declutter your Life

With a brand new year, the desire to downsize, live with less, and declutter starts to take over. More often than not, we as mothers, roll with it, fully intending to get rid of things, donate, and have that garage sale. In the midst of it all, sometimes overwhelm creeps in and we lose sight of what it is that we want. Today, I'm sharing some of my favorite tips to help you start to declutter your life.

So... here you are, finding yourself overwhelmed to no avail, and I’m sure you feel like your home looks like a hurricane just blasted on through. Don’t worry, I’m going to help you tackle the mess, and even help you tackle those tiny toddler tornadoes that spin out of control all over the place!

One of the first things I wanted to share with you, and probably the most important thing I am going to share with you, is to give yourself grace throughout this journey. I can’t help you out if you aren’t going to be kind to yourself in the process. This means that if you are starting on one of your projects, you simply cannot allow the negative voices to become your peanut gallery, or anti-cheerleading section. It's time to tell that negative voice in your head, the one that tells you you're not _____ enough or your _____ is too big, or too small... you know the voice... it's time to tell her to get a life. You don't need to listen to her negativity anymore.

Think about it. If your best girlfriend was sitting next to you, and she was telling you out loud... all of those negative things that you tell yourself, would you still want to be friends with her? I don't think anyone would want to stay friends with someone that was constantly crushing their self worth and self esteem. So why do we continue to do this to ourselves?

I hope you look your beautiful self in the mirror today and tell her how much you love her. I mean it. Go look yourself in the mirror. See your beautiful eyes... they have seen so much. See your smile... your smile has brought joy to so many people in this world. You are an incredible woman and you deserve to feel, love, joy and happiness. Can you see how vital this is to your success in taking care of the things going on around you? I used to think that “Self Care” was so hard, and that I didn’t have time for any of that stuff. I had so much to do and not enough hours in the day to get any of it done.

In reality, I would be productive, but I was stressed out, I was grumpy, and I wasn’t truly able to serve my family from a place of gratitude with all that grouchiness I was carrying with me. As soon as I realized what a difference it made in my own happiness, and of course my family’s, I made a promise to myself that I would never cut out my self care again, and that I wouldn’t let negativity plague my mind anymore. I committed to tea, quiet time, reading inspirational texts, journaling, devotionals, coffee, a yummy breakfast, vitamins, lighting candles, yoga and meditative breathing. I don’t do all of everything, every day, but I do the things I know are going to fulfill me and bring me the energy I need to take on what my planner says. I also doing beat myself up when things don’t go according to plan. I cannot even begin to tell you how terrible a habit this was for me. I definitely have glued on the perfectionist hat before, and still to this day I’m prying off pieces of that hat from my head. It’s totally ok to see your self care for the day as taking a few deep breaths, sleeping in for another 20 mins, or a quiet soak in the bath tub.

Don’t turn your self care into a chore. When we stop and really think about it, and think about where we are limiting ourselves, and putting up road blocks, we can get a clearer vision of where we can begin our self care.

  • Are you more prone to negative thinking?
  • Are you more prone to procrastination?
  • Are you making excuses for why you cannot do certain things?
  • Are you limiting your self with your beliefs about what you can and cannot do?

If you identify with any of this, I challenge you to ask yourself, “Is this serving me in any way?” Recently, I had a morning, facetime coffee visit with my mom, and we were chatting about this topic in particular. Seeing as my mom has been around 28 years longer than I, I know and truly value the wisdom she has to share. It was obvious then, that I share some of her insight on this topic.

Here is what my mother Martina had to say,

“When you are looking to overcome your own obstacles inside your head as to why you cannot do the things that are ‘overwhelming’ you... you can come up with all these reasons why you can’t do these things. BUT, all you need is to find one positive, to drive you forward. Don’t concentrate on the act of doing something, concentrate on the result. Stop making excuses, and stop giving yourself all these reasons why things are hard. Why can’t you make it fun or enjoyable? Once we stop making a mountain out of a molehill, things begin to flow.”

And it is so true, it all begins inside. If you were expecting some crazy organization techniques today, to help you declutter your life, I'm sorry to disappoint you. When it comes to decluttering, it needs to start from inside of us. I can’t tell you that it is going to be easy to rewrite old thought patterns, and the negative programming you have lived in before, but I can tell you that it will be worth it once you are on the other side of that. Don’t you want to see what that woman looks like?

The woman who wakes with ease and energy for her day...

The woman who can happily tend to her children when they need her...

The woman who can be strong and supportive of her spouse...

This can be you. It all comes with starting from the inside. Mind you, you don’t need to show up as this woman every day, but I’m sure if you show up in this way 90% of the time, you and those around you are going to find so much more to be grateful for.

Let’s talk about some practical steps you can take to work on framing your positive mindset, and starting a morning routine that will set you up for a successful day. I’m going to lay out the foundation of my morning routine for you, so you can add to it, take from it, and make it your own. Remember, this is a foundation, you don’t have to do things the way that I do them, or even remotely similar. The key here is to tackle a few little chores (makes you feel productive) and of course your self care (makes you feel good!) so that you can take on whatever lies ahead.

  • Make the bed
  • Tea/Coffee/Honey Lemon Water
  • Inspirational Reading/Devotional (1-2 pages)
  • Check your Planner/Calendar Get fully dressed (shoes included!)
  • Face care/make up (if you wear it)
  • Swish the toilet bowl(s)
  • Eat Breakfast
  • Empty your dishwasher
  • Start a load of laundry
  • Move your body (yoga/walk/exercise)

Maybe this seems like a big list to you. Maybe it seems completely feasible for you right now. Whatever the case, I want you to put something together for yourself that you feel comfortable with. Remember you don’t need to do all of this at once.

It actually took me a month to filter all of this into a regular working schedule. To be honest, this doesn’t take more than 90 minutes of my morning. If you are fortunate enough to have late risers in your home, you can get it all done before they wake up! If not, you have the option of getting up early for quiet time to yourself, or letting everyone know that mommy is going to do her morning routine and you can help when you are finished. Because this routine doesn’t take me very long, it also gives me the ability to stop and take care of my hubby or son if they need something.

Do what works for you, but you gotta start somewhere. I hope this list has given you a tangible starting point so that the physical decluttering flows into your routine more easily. Remember, be kind to yourself. If you are still getting into the swing of things, give yourself grace. “I may not have done everything on my list, but I am taking care of myself, I am taking care of my family, and I am an incredible woman.” This is not about inundating yourself with more things to do, it is about finding peace of mind in getting clutter out of your head, out of your home, and establishing a routine so you can enjoy being a mother.

Don’t let those negative voices get you down, and if they do, remember that I believe in you.

Meet That Crazy Oil Lady

Have we met yet? ⠀⠀ I’m Dalea Faulkner and I’m That Crazy Oil Lady! Essential Oils have always been part of my life, and today I wanted to share a little bit of my story with you.

I'm your typical creative nerdy girl. I sing. I dance. I grew up in the theatre and the dance studio. I hold a BA in English, emphasizing in Creative Writing from CSU San Bernardino. I am happily married to my hubby Brien, and a stay at home mother to our son, Daen. We homeschool, which is super rewarding! I also love to stay active with my little family. Yoga, reading, writing, painting, running, walking, and coloring are all activities that I enjoy and partake in regularly.⠀

When I was an infant, my mother (who immigrated from Germany at the age of 18) had family send her some peppermint essential oil. Throughout my childhood, adolescence, and well into adulthood, I used Lavender, Peppermint, and Melaleuca.
