DIY: Healthy Detox Habits

We take our bodies through the proverbial wringer all the time. With processed foods creeping into our cupboards and running out of time to cook homemade meals due to being overworked, taking your body through a gentle cleanse, and subsequently a 30 day cleanse, is a proactive way to combat this.

I want you to remember that it is ok to mess up. It's ok to slip here and there. None of us are perfect, and if we were, we would be one big bunch of boring people, right?

The best thing about all of this is that it is SIMPLE and will be easily integrated into your already busy lifestyle! I know you are busy. I KNOW it. Even when most of us have a moment for a breather or some down time, we usually find a way to fill that void with some sort of productive activity instead of kicking back and relaxing.

SO, that being said, give yourself permission to be imperfect, and fill yourself with as much love and gratitude as you can muster while you are cleansing. How do I Start?

Likely the most important thing I can tell you is to start out slow and gentle.

The simplest part of your daily cleanse is going to be adding a drop of Lemon essential oil to a glass of water, three times throughout your day. Not only will this encourage you to drink more water, but it will also flush out some of the yuck you may be carrying around with you. Take a look at how LEMON can support your body:

Fill up your Smoothie Cup

Fill up your Smoothie Cup

This is my HANDS down, ABSOLUTE, FAVORITE, Smoothie recipe ever! It doesn’t take very much time to prepare, it’s super tasty and incredibly filling. This recipe will make enough for 2 large servings or 3 small-medium servings.

You will need:

  • Peppermint Essential Oil

  • Vanilla TrimShake Protein

  • Raw Local Honey

  • Coconut Water

  • Fresh Mango or Strawberries (I like Mango!)

  • Fresh Lime (or Lime Essential Oil)

  • Himalayan Pink Salt

  • Avocado

  • Ice

Directions:

  • Add 2 cups of coconut water to your blender. Add in 1 or 2 scoops of the Vanilla TrimShake. Take about 1 cup of mango and add that to your blender. Shake or grind a bit of the salt into your hand, and pinch off a bit to add to the blender.

  • Halve and remove the pit from the avocado. Add both halves to the blender. (No skin of course!)

  • Cut the Lime in half and squeeze about 2tbs worth (or more if you like!) in. If you are using Lime essential oil instead, use 2-3 drops.

  • Squeeze or spoon in about 2tbs of your honey. Put the ice in the blender. And of course, last but not least, add 1 drop of peppermint essential oil. YES! One drop is plenty. I promise!

  • Go ahead and blend until your delicious drink is nice and smooth, with no lumps or ice chunks. Pour into pretty glasses and enjoy with a friend or by yourself! YUM!

Turmeric

I have literally been waiting for this oil forever! I'm obsessed with benefits of Turmeric and I'm even more excited about the powerful benefits the essential oil brings to the table! You’ve probably heard of turmeric before—it’s the spice that makes curries and mustard yellow in color. Maybe you’ve even seen it available as a supplement at your local health-food store. That turmeric powder in capsules and spice bottles comes from a root that is dried and ground. However, an option you probably have heard less about is Turmeric essential oil. Establishing Healthy Boundaries

I need to share something that has been on my mind for a while... something in the world that needs to be healed. Our boundaries. In this beautiful world today, we have access to so much with our technology. I remember when I was a kid, before we had caller ID and voicemail, and I also remember that time of boundaries. I vividly remember my mom sharing with me that my friends weren’t allowed to contact me after 9pm. At the time I thought it was strange, but I’m so grateful she instilled this in me.

As an entrepreneur, sometimes we have the tendency or compulsion, to be available to everyone at all times. We ask ourselves ridiculous questions like, “What if it’s an important message?” or something like, “What if I’m missing out on a new customer?” or even worse, “What if I’m letting someone down?” I have thought all of this and so much more, and have had my fair share of apologies to my family for “having to” run off to another room for a quick call. Don’t get it twisted though, all of those moments were choices. ⠀ ⠀

Why are we choosing to allow our technology to dictate our actions? I’m of the mindset now that the “Do not disturb” feature is my new best friend. Re-writing your boundaries isn’t going to be easy, but I can tell you it will be worth it. Give yourself a little grace and TLC by deciding on a time when you’ll respond to your messages. Break out of the compulsions and craziness, and get back to communicating in a way that lights up your soul. ⠀ ⠀

Tangerine has easily become one of my favorite essential oils. Not only is it a wonderfully refreshing oil, but it is also soothing to muscles and joints! Who would have thought, right? Let's dive in and take a look at some of the wonderful ways you can use Tangerine Essential Oil.

Tangerine has a long history of use in Chinese culture and herbal health practices. The essential oil supports healthy digestion and metabolism. Tangerine has a sweet, tangy aroma, similar to other citrus oils, that is uplifting. Tangerine is known for its cleansing properties, and for supporting a healthy immune and respiratory system. Tangerine essential oil can be used to help soothe anxious feelings and manage stress. A popular and flavorful addition to desserts and drinks—from water to fruit smoothies—Tangerine can be used in any recipe calling for citrus fruits.

Tangerine fruit grows on the Citrus reticulata tree, an evergreen that bears bright orange, sweet citrus fruit and white flowers. Because of the sweet scent and taste of the tangerine fruit, it is commonly used for desserts, beverages, and spreads. The tangerine fruit is also frequently eaten plain, because it is easy to peel and considered a juicy, delicious snack. Tangerine essential oil is taken from the peel or rind of the tangerine fruit through the process of cold expression. While the process of steam distillation uses heat to extract essential oils from plants, the process of cold pressing extracts the oil from the rind of the fruit.

Uses

  • Add 2–3 drops as a flavoring in cake and cookie recipes

  • Add 1–2 drops in water, smoothies, teas, or lemonade for flavoring

  • To energize and uplift mood, place 1–2 drops in the palm of your hand, rub together, and cup over the nose and mouth for 30 seconds or diffuse throughout the room

  • Apply to flex points or abdomen to promote feelings of happiness. Dilute with a carrier oil to minimize sensitivity if needed

Grab some Tangerine Essential Oil!

Tangerine Cranberry Scones

Ingredients

Scones 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon kosher salt| 4 tablespoons salted butter, cubed 1 tablespoon grated tangerine zest 1 cup chopped dried cranberries ¾ cup plus 4 tablespoons heavy cream

Glaze 1 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon grated tangerine zest 1 tablespoon tangerine juice 3 drops Tangerine oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425° F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a large glass bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, and salt. Cut the butter into the mixture using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Add the tangerine zest and dried cranberries.

  3. Make a well in the center of the dry mixture and add ¾ cup of the heavy cream. Mix the dough together. It should have a slightly dry texture, but not crumbly. Add an additional one to two tablespoons of heavy cream if the dough seems too dry.

  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for one minute. Form the dough into a round one-inch thick, and use a knife or a pizza cutter to cut the round into eight equal wedges. Arrange the wedges in a round, but about one inch apart, on the baking sheet.

  5. Brush the wedges with four tablespoons heavy cream and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the scones are golden and the edges are lightly toasted.

  6. For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, tangerine zest, orange juice, and Tangerine essential oil in a glass bowl. Drizzle on top of the warm scones.

Tip: Serve the scones warm.

Essential oils like Tangerine that have high levels of the monoterpene limonene are often known for their ability to have stimulating and enhancing effects on mood. The stimulating and mood-enhancing effects of tangerine can be experienced by using the oil aromatically—diffusing or inhaling the essential oil. When found in essential oils, limonene is also known for its cleansing and purifying properties, which makes it helpful for cleansing surfaces around the home.

As a sweet, citrus essential oil, Tangerine blends well with a variety of oils for diffusion. When you want to embrace the scents of fall, consider blending Tangerine oil with warm, spicy oils like Cinnamon Bark or Clove. You can also blend Tangerine oil with other citrus oils like Bergamot or Lemon for a bright, uplifting aroma. The tangy scent of Tangerine essential oil can also blend well with mint essential oils like Peppermint or Spearmint.

  • Post a blank sheet of paper on the wall or use a journal to count your achievements. Focus on the positive aspects associated with your goals instead of minor failures. When faced with a negative thought, use this record to remind yourself of your achievements.
  • Consider befriending new people—people who are optimistic and have a healthy attitude towards life. Sometimes a poor attitude is a result of surrounding ourselves with individuals who have negative perspectives.

Improve your Diet

  • Don’t skip meals. When you skip a meal, your body goes into “survival” mode, slowing your metabolism and storing excess food or glucose as fat. Instead, consider a meal replacement to reduce hunger and provide needed nutrients.
  • Choosing water over sugar-sweetened beverages can aid in maintaining a healthy weight. Substituting water for one 20-ounce sugar-sweetened soda will save you about 240 calories.
  • Focus on nding a balance between hungry and full. Stop eating when you are no longer hungry, not when you are full. To help, try decreasing portion size by using a child-size plate.
  • Don’t make the mistake of trying to change everything overnight. Decrease or replace one unhealthy food item at a time. For example, if you like chips, switch to baked or multigrain.
  • For a simpler approach to making healthy choices, think of your diet in terms of color, variety, and freshness.

Exercise

Exercise does more than just burn calories. It can positively in uence many components of health, including body chemistry and physiology. Proper exercise expends calories during and after activity, promotes better sleep, decreases cravings for unhealthy food, and can even elevate cognitive function.

Creating New Habits

When were are transitioning into a healthier lifestyle, sometimes creating new habits can be a bit daunting. We think about all of the things we are leaving behind, maybe hang on a little to tightly to the past, and have a hard time being consistent with our new habits. Before we jump in, remember that you don't have to be perfect. You are taking care of yourself and that also means your journey doesn't have to look a certain way to be successful.

Creating new habits doesn't have to be a scary task, in fact, I would encourage you to make this the most fun and exciting thing you do today! Find something that you love, and focus on that! What do I mean by this? Take a look...

Food Habits

  • When it comes to creating healthier habits in the realm of food, don't focus on the foods you aren't eating! Focus on a specific food, that you love and enjoy! I freaking love avocados, so if I add that to a dish, I know that I'm going to get to savor the experience, since it has a food that I love!

Exercise Habits

  • Don't force yourself to do exercise that you hate. Try new things to figure out what your style is. Maybe you are super into running but not much a fan of yoga. Maybe you hate running, and Tai Chi is totally your thing. Maybe you love weights but hate cardio. Whatever the case, focus on an activity you LOVE so that you want to keep doing it!

Oil Habits

  • Use oils that you LOVE! I will be honest, there are a few oils that when I smelled them at first, I wasn't a fan. Over time however, the aroma changed for me and I'm able to love them! Find a way to incorporate the oils you love into your daily routine. Love Lemon? Add it to your diffuser, and to your glass of water in the morning to start your day feeling refreshed! Get creative, and make your habits FUN!

Today, we are going to talk about cleansing your body of toxic crap. Yes, I've talked about doing a Simple Detox before, but that's not what we are talking about today. I'm talking about the crap that is lurking in your bathroom cupboards... ahhh yes, I think you know what I mean! Yep. Your 4,000 Bath and Body Works Products! Cleanse your body, by detoxing the Bathroom. You didn't think this was going to be a minimalist post... but it totally is. In any case, our bathroom is a reflection of how we are feeling! How messy is yours right now?

Confession time.

I am a former Bath & BodyWorks hoarder. A queen if you will. I’m a sucker for pretty smelling things, but I am not a fan of chemical concoctions. Since 2013 I’ve gone totally hippie and use oils & natural solutions for everything in my home, to make things smell good (including myself!) and it’s been great! No judgement here if you are a hardcore BBW fan! I indulge in a candle or a lotion once in a blue moon... usually around fall since it’s my favorite time of the year, and I love Pumpkin smelling anything! I digress... what I want to focus on in this chapter is the 46 different body lotions, washes, and sprays you have that are taking up 3 cabinets worth of space in your bathroom. Or maybe have even overflowed into a second bathroom!

Ask yourself this question, “Do I need all of these?” Don’t give yourself credit here. You know, I know, and all the other mamas reading this know the answer.

No.

You don’t need all of them.

I promise.

You really don’t need them.

You need water. You need sleep. You need food. You need human contact and physical touch. You need a creative outlet. You don’t need 4,000 Bath & BodyWorks products. Now that we got that out of the way, I think you see where I’m headed. Narrow it down mama! No one is telling you to trash it all. By all means if you have brand new ones that you don’t want or really intend to use, donate them to a shelter or to your church. Someone will be totally thrilled and grateful to receive that goodie. If you don’t like to waste, create a small (keyword SMALL) bin with some extras that you will use once the ones in your shower are empty and store the bin in a linen cupboard out of reach of little hands. If you're wanting to go full detox, and remove it all, go for it. There are so many amazing body care and skincare products offered by doTERRA, that I've got you covered! (without the toxic crap!)

Now take this same process and apply it to the other toiletries in your cupboards. And the items in your medicine cabinet! Check the dates on any medications to see if they are expired. If they have expired, please be sure to look up and see how to dispose of them properly. Take a look at your towels. Do you have enough towels in your bathroom for everyone that uses that bath or shower? Or do you have more than enough and could shed a few to a guest cabinet/linen closet/or donate to a local animal shelter? How many bottles of shampoo and conditioner are in your shower? Is it for a practical reason, like a special hair/scalp condition? Or is it because you just randomly have 4 different shampoos because you never use them up? Or maybe you have empty bottles in the shower you intend to throw out each time but never do. Whatever the case, assess the space. Identify what you need in there, and respond accordingly.

  1. Set a Timer Working in intervals will help you prevent yourself from burning out. If you set out to clear out a space and it seems overwhelming, set the timer. Depending on how you are feeling, you can work anywhere from 5 minute intervals up to 30 minute intervals. Make sure that you are taking breaks in between, as it is important to sustain your energy to continue. My favorite thing about this too, sometimes I like to race the clock and see who dings first!
  2. Rock some Tunes Maybe there are some people out there that work best in silence, but that is SO not me! I need some good jams to keep me in an upbeat mood so that I'm not grouchy mom when my 5 year old interrupts me. Make yourself a playlist and get going. You know what lights you up, so put it together and turn it up! Who cares if your kids look at you funny while you're rocking out to *NSYNC?

It could just be me... haha I don’t know why, but the bathroom(s) seem like such a huge chore. Maybe it’s because we feel like we are drowning amongst the warm vanilla sugar and japanese cherry blossom, and just don’t know how to move forward. Or we get side tracked and start judging our cleaning skills (or lack thereof) and start scrutinizing everything we see, from the toilet ring to the dust behind the toilet. No judgement here. You are in the process of detoxing and clearing out your space. Once it is clear, then you will have no trouble getting it clean.

This is also a good time to evaluate if the products you are using are products you want to continue using. I’m not telling you to go hippie like I did, (okay, okay, I secretly am) but if you are looking to use greener-cleaner products in your home... now is the time to do it. If you are letting go of the chemicals and fragrance, cool. remember that what we put on our bodies, goes into our bodies! I have tons of natural and DIY recipes all over the blog, so poke around! If you're not ready for that yet, still cool! You gotta use what makes you happy and what makes you feel good.

WRAP #1

  • 4oz Glass Spray Bottle
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 40 drops Slim & Sassy
  • 15 drops Eucalyptus
  • 15 drops Wintergreen
  • 10 drops Peppermint
  • 10 drops Lavender
  • 10 drops Grapefruit
  • 5 drops Cypress

DIRECTIONS

Add the oils to your bottle first, and then fill the rest of the way with the fractionated coconut oil. Shake it up! If you want to, you can take measurements before you wrap your body. Spray the wrap solution onto the desired areas that you wish to wrap. FIRST place a muslin cloth or ace bandage on the area you are wrapping. THEN you can use a plastic wrap to help secure everything.

  • 1 Tbsp of Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 5 drops Slim & Sassy
  • 5 drops Grapefruit

DIRECTIONS

Apply to target area and wrap with some sort of cloth. Secure with plastic wrap.

You can leave either of these wraps on for 3-5 hours, or if possible you can leave on overnight. Make sure you are drinking lots of water (with Lemon oil too!) When you are done wrapping, you can take measurements again. Enjoy!
