Aromatherapy Top Notes

Aromatherapy can be much like the fragrance industry, in the sense that there are top notes, middle notes, and bottom notes in the different aromas of essential oil. I wanted to share a fun guide with you today, that has all of my favorite top note essential oils. These oils can help to create a sharp, fresh, and light aroma that evaporates more quickly than other notes. They also provide stimulating, cleansing, and uplifting effects on the mind and body. Let's jump in and chat about these top note oils, and what makes them so great.


Ocimum basilicum 

Aroma: Sweet, herbaceous, and fresh.The spicy, yet herbal nature of Basil makes it a versatile oil that can be used to promote focus and alertness. Blends well with Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Geranium, Lemongrass, Marjoram, and Rose.


Citrus bergamia

Aroma: Fresh, fruity, sweet, and spicy. With both calming and uplifting abilities, Bergamot can dissipate anxious feelings while simultaneously providing cleansing and purifying benefits. Blends well with other citrus oils, Roman Chamomile, Coriander, Lavender, Neroli, and Rosemary.

Clary Sage

Salvia sclarea

Aroma: Heavy, mellow, floral & nutty. With uses dating back to the Middle Ages, Clary Sage essential oil includes relaxing and soothing properties that help with rejuvenation and calming of the skin. Blends well with, Bergamot, Frankincense, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Juniper Berry, and Lavender.


Eucalyptus radiata

Aroma: Sharp, fresh, and camphorous. Used to cleanse surfaces and the air, Eucalyptus essential oil can help promote feelings of relaxation and clear breathing. Blends well with Bergamot, Cedarwood, Cypress, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Thyme, and Melaleuca.


Foeniculum vulgare

Aroma: Strong, sweet, green, and licoricey. With several health benefits dating back to ancient Rome, Fennel essential oil can still be used to promote healthy digestion and respiratory function,promote healthy metabolism, liver function, and circulation. Blends well with, Basil, Geranium, Juniper Berry, Lemon, and Rosemary.


Zingiber officinale

Aroma: Warm, pungent, woody, and spicy. Ginger is best known as a digestive aid and for helping to ease occasional indigestion and nausea. Ginger essential oil can also be applied topically or inhaled for a soothing aroma. Blends well with, Cardamom, Cedarwood, Citrus oils, Coriander, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Geranium, Juniper Berry, and Rosemary.


Citrus X paradisi

Aroma: Sweet, sharp, and citrusy. Grapefruit essential oil can provide an uplifting environment due to its invigorating and energizing aroma, while acting as a purifying agent when added to a skin care routine. Blends well with, Basil, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Rose, and Ylang, Ylang.

Juniper Berry

Juniperus communis

Aroma: Pungent, green, fresh, and woody. With the ability to cleanse and purify the air, the fresh aroma of Juniper Berry essential oil can produce a calming, grounding effect. Blends well with, Cedarwood, Citrus oils, Frankincense, Geranium, Lemongrass, Melissa, Rosemary, and Sandalwood.


Citrus limon

Aroma: Penetrating, fresh, sweet, and green. The cleansing, purifying, and invigorating properties of Lemon make it one of the most versatile oils, not to mention the top-selling essential oil that doTERRA offers. Blends well with, Cardamom, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Lavender, Rose, Sandalwood, and Ylang Ylang.


Cymbopogon flexuosus

Aroma: Sharp, powerful, sweet, and citrus-like. Lemongrass essential oil promotes healthy digestion and acts as an overall tonic to the body’s systems when ingested. It’s also purifying and toning to the skin, and is frequently used in skin care products for these benefits. Blends well with, Basil, Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Neroli, and Rosemary.


Citrus aurantifolia

Aroma: Citrus, sharp, sweet, and fresh. Known for its distinct aroma and taste, Lime provides cleansing benefits when taken internally or used topically—making it the perfect oil for purifying skin, air, and surfaces. Blends well with, Clary Sage, Lavender, and Neroli.


Melissa officinalis

Aroma: Sweet, lemony, fresh, and green. With the ability to positively affect mood, Melissa essential oil is often used to reduce tense feelings, promote relaxation, and calm feelings of nervousness.Blends well with Basil, Roman Chamomile, Geranium, Ginger, Jasmine, Juniper Berry, Lemon, Neroli, Wild Orange, Rose, and Ylang Ylang.


Mentha piperita

Aroma: Clean, fresh, and penetrating. Peppermint helps alleviate occasional stomach upset and promotes healthy respiratory function when taken internally. Peppermint continues to be one of the best-selling favorites among doTERRA essential oils. Blends well with, Black Pepper, Cedarwood, Lemon, Marjoram, and Rosemary.


Citrus aurantium

Aroma: Bittersweet, fresh, and floral. Petitgrain delivers calming and relaxing benefits to ease feelings of tension and stress. Historically, Petitgrain essential oil has been used for cleaning purposes and it has been used internally to support healthy immune system and nervous system function. Blends well with, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Geranium, Lavender, Melissa, Neroli, Wild Orange, Rosemary, and Sandalwood.


Rosmarinus officinalis

Aroma: Spicy, pungent, and pine-like. Long revered by experts, Rosemary was considered sacred by the ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Hebrew cultures, and helps to reduce nervous tension and occasional fatigue. Blends well with, Basil, Citrus oils, Frankincense, Lavender, and Peppermint.


Mentha spicata

Aroma: Minty and fruity. Spearmint's sweet, refreshing aroma is cleansing and uplifting, making it ideal to evoke a sense of focus and positive mood. Blends well with, Basil, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lavender, Rosemary, and Sandalwood.


Melaleuca alternifolia

Aroma: Pungent, spicy, and camphorous. Melaleuca, or Tea Tree oil, is best known for its purifying qualities, which make it useful for cleansing the skin and home surfaces, purifying the air, or promoting healthy immune function. Blends well with, Clary Sage, Clove, Lavender, Rosemary, and Ylang Ylang.


Thymus vulgaris

Aroma: Sweet and fresh. Thought to impart courage to its bearer, Thyme was given to knights and warriors before they went into battle by ladies of the Middle Ages. During this same period, Thyme was often placed beneath pillows to help promote a peaceful sleep and to ward off nightmares. With a specific chemistry that supports a healthy immune system, Thyme is a potent, warm essential oil that holds powerful cleansing and purifying properties. Blends well with, Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Juniper Berry, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Rosemary, and Melaleuca.

Girls Night Fun!

Okay ladies, this one is for you! I don't know about you, but I often get caught up in the day-to-day of life. Chores, kids, meals, know the drill (probably all too well!) I get drained reeealllly easily with all that I have going on, and as much as I ADORE my husband - nothing helps me forget about yoga pants and dried baby food on my shirt like a fun girls night out!

Get your Girl's Night Party Started!

I shared some of my Girls Night recipes before, (what a hit!) so I figured I just had to share them again! Here are two quick and easy recipes for you gals to pamper yourselves and have a great time together! I'm a big fan of being pampered, but sometimes I don't want to spend a fortune on it! These super savvy money saving recipes are sure to be a hit with all of your friends!

Girls Night!


  • Beat the egg with a whisk or a fork. and then mix in jojoba oil, and peppermint.
  • Use your fingers to lightly apply the mixture to the face, avoiding your eyes and surrounding area.
  • Leave on the mask for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with cool water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Here is another recipe you can enjoy while you are waiting for your masks to finish!

  • Fill a basin big enough for hands or your feet with warm water
  • Mix powdered milk and essential oil together in a small dish.
  • Add mixture to the water basin and stir
  • Soak tootsies or hands for 10-15 minutes, or longer if you just cant get enough!

Moving... again? Not quite yet...
