DIY: Healthy Detox Habits

We take our bodies through the proverbial wringer all the time. With processed foods creeping into our cupboards and running out of time to cook homemade meals due to being overworked, taking your body through a gentle cleanse, and subsequently a 30 day cleanse, is a proactive way to combat this.

healthy detox habits

I want you to remember that it is ok to mess up. It's ok to slip here and there. None of us are perfect, and if we were, we would be one big bunch of boring people, right?

The best thing about all of this is that it is SIMPLE and will be easily integrated into your already busy lifestyle! I know you are busy. I KNOW it. Even when most of us have a moment for a breather or some down time, we usually find a way to fill that void with some sort of productive activity instead of kicking back and relaxing.

I want you to remember that it is ok to mess up. It's ok to slip here and there. None of us are perfect, and if we were, we would be one big bunch of boring people, right? SO, that being said, give yourself permission to be imperfect, and fill yourself with as much love and gratitude as you can muster while you are cleansing. You may be prone to grumpiness in the beginning, and that is ok. Allow yourself those moments and move forward with love.

I'm here to to support you and I'm always around for questions!

Let’s Cleanse that Body!

Start with Lemon

How do I Start?

Likely the most important thing I can tell you is to start out slow and gentle.

The simplest part of your daily cleanse is going to be adding a drop of Lemon essential oil to a glass of water, three times throughout your day. Not only will this encourage you to drink more water, but it will also flush out some of the yuck you may be carrying around with you. Take a look at how LEMON can support your body:

  • Naturally cleanses the body and aids in digestion

  • Supports healthy respiratory function

  • Promotes a positive mood and cognitive ability

  • Helps ward off free radicals with its antioxidant benefits

  • Soothes an irritated throat

So I am sure you can see why adding this to your current routine would be super beneficial! Even if you only choose to do this, you will really be supporting your body in a gentle and wonderful way! My top tip when doing this is to always start with one drop! You can always choose to add more in the future, but for now…

Start with one!

Powerful Vitamin Trio

Powerful Vitamin Trio

I have to share about the vitamin supplements that I use personally to support my nutrition and promote an overall sense of well being! Of course I’m talking about the Lifelong Vitality trio! What is fab about them is that they also gently cleanse the body while simultaneously nourish it through vitamins, minerals, essential oils, and whole food nutrients.

This triad of awesomeness is compiled of xEO Mega, Micro Plex MVp, and Alpha CRS+. The recommended full daily dose is 4 of each, for a total of 12 vitamins. These are to be taken with food. Don't take your vities on an empty stomach, please!

HOWEVER, starting out with 1 of each and seeing how you feel is the best way to go when you are taking a gentler approach to a cleanse. You know your body better than anyone else, so listen to it and follow your gut. Literally.

Follow. Your. Gut.

Another sweet benefit to these supplements is that you can take them all the time. My husband and I take them every day, and they really give us that extra little something to get us though our days!

If you take a look at this post I did here, you can see all of the valuable benefits to these supplements, and to be honest, this barely scratches the surface!

Simple. Gentle. Effective.

Fill up your Smoothie Cup

Fill up your Smoothie Cup

This is my HANDS down, ABSOLUTE, FAVORITE, Smoothie recipe ever! It doesn’t take very much time to prepare, it’s super tasty and incredibly filling. This recipe will make enough for 2 large servings or 3 small-medium servings.

You will need:

  • Peppermint Essential Oil

  • Vanilla TrimShake Protein

  • Raw Local Honey

  • Coconut Water

  • Fresh Mango or Strawberries (I like Mango!)

  • Fresh Lime (or Lime Essential Oil)

  • Himalayan Pink Salt

  • Avocado

  • Ice

Directions:

  • Add 2 cups of coconut water to your blender. Add in 1 or 2 scoops of the Vanilla TrimShake. Take about 1 cup of mango and add that to your blender. Shake or grind a bit of the salt into your hand, and pinch off a bit to add to the blender.

  • Halve and remove the pit from the avocado. Add both halves to the blender. (No skin of course!)

  • Cut the Lime in half and squeeze about 2tbs worth (or more if you like!) in. If you are using Lime essential oil instead, use 2-3 drops.

  • Squeeze or spoon in about 2tbs of your honey. Put the ice in the blender. And of course, last but not least, add 1 drop of peppermint essential oil. YES! One drop is plenty. I promise!

  • Go ahead and blend until your delicious drink is nice and smooth, with no lumps or ice chunks. Pour into pretty glasses and enjoy with a friend or by yourself! YUM!

And that is it my darling! A very simple system to create healthy detox habits in your life! If you are looking for a longer cleanse, I have a free PDF you can download below!

Green Mandarin

You may already be familiar with Red Mandarin oil from other limited time offers; Green Mandarin comes from the same mandarin tree, but is from the unripened fruit instead of the mature fruit. Its aroma is slightly sweet and floral with a tang of citrus! As with other citrus oils, it is uplifting when worn on the skin or diffused. Unlike other citrus oils, Green Mandarin has no photosensitivity! Yay!

Green Mandarin Essential Oil

Limonene, one of the main chemical components of Green Mandarin essential oil, is renowned for its surface cleansing properties. Limonene may also help support cellular function, along with γ-Terpinene. Green Mandarin may provide antioxidant support and help support cardiovascular health. Create a bright and energized environment while diffusing the sweet, refreshing aroma of Green Mandarin throughout your home or workplace.

Emotionally uplifting and blissfully fragrant, Green Mandarin is unique among citrus oils and offers a wide variety of uses. Its fruity aroma has subtle floral undertones, making it a desirable addition to natural perfumes and cosmetics. Thanks to its unique chemistry, it offers remarkable skin and hair benefits similar to those from Melaleuca (Tea Tree). Green Mandarin is known for its soothing properties on the nervous system and its ability to support healthy digestive, immune, and respiratory function. Green Mandarin promotes a cheerful, energized mood while soothing feelings of upset or oversensitivity.

You can also use Green Mandarin internally for soothing the nervous system, supporting the healthy function and response of the immune system, and supporting the digestive system.

Green Mandarin oil is sustainably sourced in Brazil. The doTERRA network of Brazilian citrus farmers uses the income from their green mandarin harvest to cover farming costs for the year. Later, their red mandarin harvest (from the fully ripened fruit) is mostly for profit. This creates a sustainable, steady income throughout the year for small and large scale growers, reduces green waste, and yields two beautiful essential oils with unique chemistry.

Mandarin trees needs to be thinned while the fruit is still young and unripe. Approximately 60-70 percent of the green fruit is removed from the tree during this thinning process. In the past, this unripe fruit was discarded or left on the ground to decompose, as the fruit too tart to be enjoyed. However, a unique essential oil is contained in these young, unripe fruits. The cold-pressed green rinds yield a fragrant, uplifting oil distinct from that of fully ripened mandarins (which is known as Red Mandarin essential oil). Green Mandarin offers a wider range of benefits than most other citrus oils and may be preferred for cosmetic use.

USES

  • Incorporate Green Mandarin in your home as a food preservative or dilute it in a spray bottle to clean the surfaces of your kitchen.

  • May help soothe the nervous system when taken internally.

  • Incorporate into your oral hygiene routine to promote healthy-looking teeth.

  • Take one to two drops to help support healthy immune function and response.

  • Diffuse with Basil, Sandalwood, Lavender, or Spearmint to experience the positive emotional benefits of these essential oils.

Initially, to get Green Mandarin in your home, you would have had to purchase the Harmony Aroma Handcraft Collection earlier this year! However, it has become a permanent addition to our product line and is available today!

Diffuser Jewelry & Blends

Sometimes we want to take our fancy diffuser blends with us on the go, whether we are traveling, or just headed to the grocery store. (Am I right?!) So I wanted to share a fun DIY recipe with you today to make your own diffuser jewelry, and of course, some awesome blends to wear!

This Aromatherapy Jewelry is made out of natural terra-cotta clay that absorbs essential oils. While this tutorial is for a necklace, try making any type of jewelry: earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, beads, etc. Once the clay is sculpted and dried, add a few drops of an essential oil or blend to the jewelry to experience the power of essential oils throughout the day. This DIY can also be use to make car air fresheners, Christmas ornaments, key chains, and more.

Items Needed

  • Terra-cotta clay
  • Sand paper
  • Stamps (small—no more than 1 inch in diameter)
  • Shish kabob stick or toothpick
  • String
  • 1–1 ¼ inch round cut-out object
  • Rolling pin (or pen/pencil will work)
  • Scissors
  • Aluminum foil
  • Wax paper

Tip: Store your scented jewelry when it is not being worn in your linen closet or dresser drawers to keep fabrics smelling great.

Instructions

  1. Grab a handful of terra-cotta clay and rub in palms of hands until it’s soft and pliable.
  2. Place a piece of wax paper on the table.
  3. Use the rolling pin to roll out the clay until it is ⅛ inch thick.
  4. Take the round object and press firmly into the clay to make circle pendants.
  5. Remove the excess clay from the cut out pendants. Take each pendant and stamp a design into clay.
  6. Take a shish kabob stick or toothpick and make a hole in the pendant. Make sure the hole is big enough to fit two strands of string into.
  7. With the left over clay, make a few small round beads and put a medium to large size hole in the center of it.
  8. Once all the pendants have holes, place them on a cookie sheet covered in aluminum foil and bake or air dry according to the specifications provided with your clay.
  9. If baking in the oven, be careful to not overbake. They may seem bendable as soon as they are taken out of the oven, but they will harden once cooled completely.
  10. Once cool, use sandpaper to lightly smooth away any rough edges. It will temporarily change the color of the clay, but will return to normal once essential oils are applied.
  11. Take a string and cut it to desired length. Add 4–5 extra inches just to be safe. The string can be cut shorter later on.
  12. Take the pendant and put both ends of the string through the hole. Pull the ends through and put them through the loop. Pull tight. This will help the pendant lay flat on your chest.
  13. For a longer necklace, tie the two strings together.
Tip: For a shorter necklace, tie one end of the necklace in a knot a couple inches down. Place a bead on next and then tie a knot on top of the bead so it remains securely in place. On the other end of necklace, tie a loop that is large enough for the bead to fit through. Cut off any extra string. To take your necklace on and off, simply put the bead in the hole that will act as a clasp.
  14. Add 1 drop essential oil or blend to the pendant. Rub the oil around.

Enjoy the benefits of essential oils throughout the day. If the scent begins to fade, add another drop to the pendant. Remember, a little essential oil goes a long way.

Cleanse your Body

Today, we are going to talk about cleansing your body of toxic crap. Yes, I've talked about doing a Simple Detox before, but that's not what we are talking about today. I'm talking about the crap that is lurking in your bathroom cupboards... ahhh yes, I think you know what I mean! Yep. Your 4,000 Bath and Body Works Products! Cleanse your body, by detoxing the Bathroom. You didn't think this was going to be a minimalist post... but it totally is. In any case, our bathroom is a reflection of how we are feeling! How messy is yours right now?

Confession time.

I am a former Bath & BodyWorks hoarder. A queen if you will. I’m a sucker for pretty smelling things, but I am not a fan of chemical concoctions. Since 2013 I’ve gone totally hippie and use oils & natural solutions for everything in my home, to make things smell good (including myself!) and it’s been great! No judgement here if you are a hardcore BBW fan! I indulge in a candle or a lotion once in a blue moon... usually around fall since it’s my favorite time of the year, and I love Pumpkin smelling anything! I digress... what I want to focus on in this chapter is the 46 different body lotions, washes, and sprays you have that are taking up 3 cabinets worth of space in your bathroom. Or maybe have even overflowed into a second bathroom!

Ask yourself this question, “Do I need all of these?” Don’t give yourself credit here. You know, I know, and all the other mamas reading this know the answer.

No.

You don’t need all of them.

I promise.

You really don’t need them.

You need water. You need sleep. You need food. You need human contact and physical touch. You need a creative outlet. You don’t need 4,000 Bath & BodyWorks products. Now that we got that out of the way, I think you see where I’m headed. Narrow it down mama! No one is telling you to trash it all. By all means if you have brand new ones that you don’t want or really intend to use, donate them to a shelter or to your church. Someone will be totally thrilled and grateful to receive that goodie. If you don’t like to waste, create a small (keyword SMALL) bin with some extras that you will use once the ones in your shower are empty and store the bin in a linen cupboard out of reach of little hands. If you're wanting to go full detox, and remove it all, go for it. There are so many amazing body care and skincare products offered by doTERRA, that I've got you covered! (without the toxic crap!)

Now take this same process and apply it to the other toiletries in your cupboards. And the items in your medicine cabinet! Check the dates on any medications to see if they are expired. If they have expired, please be sure to look up and see how to dispose of them properly. Take a look at your towels. Do you have enough towels in your bathroom for everyone that uses that bath or shower? Or do you have more than enough and could shed a few to a guest cabinet/linen closet/or donate to a local animal shelter? How many bottles of shampoo and conditioner are in your shower? Is it for a practical reason, like a special hair/scalp condition? Or is it because you just randomly have 4 different shampoos because you never use them up? Or maybe you have empty bottles in the shower you intend to throw out each time but never do. Whatever the case, assess the space. Identify what you need in there, and respond accordingly.

  1. Set a Timer Working in intervals will help you prevent yourself from burning out. If you set out to clear out a space and it seems overwhelming, set the timer. Depending on how you are feeling, you can work anywhere from 5 minute intervals up to 30 minute intervals. Make sure that you are taking breaks in between, as it is important to sustain your energy to continue. My favorite thing about this too, sometimes I like to race the clock and see who dings first!
  2. Rock some Tunes Maybe there are some people out there that work best in silence, but that is SO not me! I need some good jams to keep me in an upbeat mood so that I'm not grouchy mom when my 5 year old interrupts me. Make yourself a playlist and get going. You know what lights you up, so put it together and turn it up! Who cares if your kids look at you funny while you're rocking out to *NSYNC?

It could just be me... haha I don’t know why, but the bathroom(s) seem like such a huge chore. Maybe it’s because we feel like we are drowning amongst the warm vanilla sugar and japanese cherry blossom, and just don’t know how to move forward. Or we get side tracked and start judging our cleaning skills (or lack thereof) and start scrutinizing everything we see, from the toilet ring to the dust behind the toilet. No judgement here. You are in the process of detoxing and clearing out your space. Once it is clear, then you will have no trouble getting it clean.

This is also a good time to evaluate if the products you are using are products you want to continue using. I’m not telling you to go hippie like I did, (okay, okay, I secretly am) but if you are looking to use greener-cleaner products in your home... now is the time to do it. If you are letting go of the chemicals and fragrance, cool. remember that what we put on our bodies, goes into our bodies! I have tons of natural and DIY recipes all over the blog, so poke around! If you're not ready for that yet, still cool! You gotta use what makes you happy and what makes you feel good.

I hope that this was super helpful and helps you tackle all of the bathrooms in your home!

Slim & Sassy

If you are pursuing weight loss goals, there's an oil that can help with that! One of my favorite essential oil blends is called Slim & Sassy, and it is pure magic!  The Slim & Sassy Metabolic Blend was specifically designed as a natural way to manage hunger cravings, calm the stomach, and uplift mood. When used as part of a healthy weight management program and combined with a healthy diet and exercise, Slim & Sassy can help boost metabolism and curb hunger cravings! One of my secret tips... add a drop of Slim & Sassy to your On Guard Toothpaste in the morning for an extra burst of energy!

When you are working toward a weight loss goal, it can be tough to change your habits and take control of your appetite. Overeating can set you back in your goals for weight management if you aren’t careful, but the Slim & Sassy blend can help control your appetite and keep you from overeating. Take Slim & Sassy oil internally before meals in order to reduce the likelihood of overeating and to help control your appetite. A major benefit of the Slim & Sassy oil blend is its ability to help promote a healthy metabolism. Those who use the Slim & Sassy Metabolic Blend can rest easy knowing that this proprietary blend is diuretic, stimulant, and calorie-free—characteristics that can be difficult to find in a weight management product.

A good workout is also an important part of any weight loss plan. However, sometimes we lack energy and enthusiasm when we think about working out. Consider adding a few drops of the Slim & Sassy Metabolic Blend to your water or tea before you work out to give yourself a revitalizing energy boost. The herbal, spicy properties of Slim & Sassy oil will help you perk up and get ready for a successful workout. Because of its vibrant, spicy scent, Slim & Sassy oil can help give you the positive mood you need during a vigorous workout, when used aromatically. Consider diffusing the Slim & Sassy oil blend during your workout to help uplift your mood and give you the positivity you need to keep going. With an invigorating scent nearby, you’ll have the mental and physical strength to make it through your workout.

While Slim & Sassy oil was designed to boost metabolism and control cravings, it can also be helpful when you need to calm your stomach or uplift your mood. As you carry out a weight management plan, you might be changing your diet, which could cause the occasional stomach distress. As you change your diet, exercise plan, and daily routine, you are also bound to feel discouraged or overwhelmed at times. With all of these emotional and physical changes happening, take Slim & Sassy to help calm your stomach troubles and uplift your mood.
