Balancing Work and Family

This year has been a new way of life for me, as I am stepping into the role of more travel for my business, and with that new territory comes a new learning curve. How can I balance my work and my family, and also feel great about the decisions I'm making involving everything? Let's chat about it and I'll share with you what I have been doing.


You may have read that my husband and I decided to end our homeschooling journey (for now?) as Daen had expressed an interest in going to school. I made a promise to him and to myself that should this ever happen I would honor it, and find a school that would support him. Fortunately I found an incredible charter academy with the help of my friends from Daen's baseball team. I can't even begin to tell you what this has done for my relationship with my son and my business. I now have released the mommy guilt that came with me working while he is home with me, and have more focused time with both him and my business. I also now have more balanced time with my husband, and we have the opportunity to go out on day dates! However, with all the new scheduling that comes into place with school and my husband's physical therapy schedule, I knew I needed to change what I was doing and be more efficient with my time. 

So what did I do? In addition to using copious amounts of Balance I have been using Tony Robbins' Time of Your Life RPM Planner and Training and it has been absolutely life changing for me! I find myself having even more time than ever by scheduling things in a particular way. More often than not, we end up writing a daunting to-do list that is miles long with no real idea of what it is that we actually want. Then we get discouraged, stressed out and frazzled because we have no idea what we are doing... we only know that we ARE doing. What I love so much about this program is that it teaches you a new way of thinking, which of gets you different results! When you plan your day/week/month/year/life out with your ultimate outcomes in mind, the reasons why you want those outcomes, and actionable steps to reach those outcomes... you experience a whole new layer of life and the newfound balance you have been craving. 


Once you have successfully mastered your time you will understand the greatness you are truly capable of achieving. Most time and life planning products focus on activity and what you need to do. I can totally attest to this as I am an avid planner lover, but have always found that what I was doing would lead me to overwhelm at some point. The RPM system focuses first on the results and outcomes you want, then connects you to why it’s important to achieve your outcomes. When the inevitable challenges show up, RPM gives you the drive to follow through and achieve with the actions you need to take. I also loved the 10 day audio system, that you can listen to while you're out running errands, or doing things around the home, so you aren't taking out any extra time in your day. 

After finishing the program, and using the RPM Planner regularly, I find myself in a beautiful state of balance in my work life, family life, and especially in my self care. Sometimes we put ourselves very last on our list, and forget to think about what we need to grow. We forget about what we need to help us stretch. We forget that we want to change. What is it that you need help focusing on? What do you WANT today? How can I help YOU? How can I SERVE you?

Holy moly! Another new year is here, and that means it's another chance to rock your Oil Biz goals, and help change the world! (Can you tell I'm excited?!) Let's dig deep and check out 5 ways we can improve our biz in 2018 and crush those goals!

Use your Oils!

  • I feel like we have talked about this before... but it's pretty obvious (and simple!) to use the oils to keep your self care in check and your body in tip top shape, so that you can spend the time you need to focus on your business.

Get in the trenches!

  • One of the best ways to understand the things your leaders and teams are struggling with, is getting out there and experiencing it for yourself! Observe them teaching a workshop or one on one. Get in there and work on finding solutions together!

Set your Intentions!

  • Is this the year that you want to feel Empowered? Inspired? Guided? Balanced? Find out what emotion you most want to feel throughout the year, and let this be your North Star in relation to your goals. Having the ability to tap into your intentions by feeling that emotion whenever you choose, is going to help keep you on track with your goals.

Set your Goals!

  • Are you planning to hit Diamond this year? What will that take? How much volume will you need? How many people is that? How many classes or one on ones will you do? What about your team? Lay out a plan for yourself so that you can see which steps are going to make your goal a reality. While you are working those steps... feel those emotions from your Intentions!

Keep it Going!

  • It is so easy to get discouraged and lose momentum after the first few months of the year. Find an inspirational speaker, or mentor that lights a fire in you that will help to keep your momentum going. PodCasts, YouTube, and even Facebook Live videos are a wonderful way to stay inspired and keep that energy high vibe!

Re-Energize your Biz

2017 is coming to a close, and you may find yourself feeling like it's time to re-energize your biz. I 100% agree, that it is the perfect time to pour new life into your essential oils business, and make choices on how you want the upcoming year to play out. Ask yourself some questions, to give a bit more clarity on where you want to be going, and this will give you everything you need to focus and re-energize those areas of your business.

Building during the Holidays

The Holiday Season is here, but that is no reason to let your essential oil business, and community fall to the wayside! Building your business during the Holidays can be fun, and far from being a chore. Let's talk about some fun ways for you to build your business during the holiday season!

Take advantage of the excitement of the holiday season and show your friends and family how doTERRA essential oils can add spice and joy to their life by hosting a Christmas-themed class! There are so many ways to do this and I will share a handful of them with you!

1. Show them Holiday blends to diffuse. 

  • 2 drops Wild Orange, 2 drops Cassia, 2 drops Siberian Fir
  • 3 drops Frankincense, 3 drops Myrrh, 3 drops Cardamom, 2 drops Siberian Fir
  • 4 drops Wintergreen and 2 drops Douglas Fir

Experiment and discover some favorites of your own! Diffusing is one of the simplest ways to let others experience the power of doTERRA. Whether you are putting together an event for your biz builders, you are teaching a class, or doing a make and take, putting together a diffuser blend is an awesome way to share!  2. Serve your guests spiced apple cider and add these essential oils to the cider of your choice:

  • 3 drops Wild Orange
  • 2 drops Cinnamon Bark or Cassia
  • 2 drops Ginger

3. Cook and bake with your essential oils together

  • If your family does a gift exchange, this is the perfect opportunity to find out who has been dreaming of a wholesale account!
  • Letting your family know that Secret Santas can come to you to find out which oils are on people's wishlists is a fun way to get everyone oiling!

Realize that many people are busy during the holidays, but there are also MANY people that are looking for fun things to do as well! Look at this season as an opportunity to connect with and serve others in your community.

Asking Great Questions

If you are building a business with doTERRA, you need to be asking great questions when you are interacting with others. This not only helps you serve people better, but it also gives them the opportunity to discover and learn more about themselves. Today I am going to dive into how we can ask great questions while we mentor leaders on our teams.

Before we dig into the questions that can be helpful to ask your leaders, I encourage you to ask yourself these questions:

  • How often do I make other people feel important?
  • When have I been really present?
  • Am I showing up to serve others?
  • What words am I using when I speak to others?
  • What am I not doing?
  • What can I improve about myself today?

Asking these questions of yourself first, can give you insight on what you need to work in your business, so that you can show up as your best self for others. When you show up as your best self, you are able to provide better quality content and training for others. Remember when you are connecting with your leader, either on the phone or in person, it's important that you are doing most of the listening. It's not up to you to create a breakthrough for your mentee/leader. It is up to your leader to have their own moment so that they can grow.

Okay, let's take a look at how you can show up to serve your leaders with some great questions! I encourage you to think of additional questions to help them dig deeper, so that you provide an opportunity for self growth & discovery.

  • Are you using the products?
  • Are you doing 30 mins per day of Personal Development?
  • Are you connecting with 2 people per day, 5 days a week?
  • Are you attending team trainings/events at least 1x a month?
  • Are you having at least 1 class per week, or 5 one on ones?
  • Are you committed to attending corporate events? (Convention, Regional summit, etc.)
  • Are you looking for your business to move at a quicker pace?
  • Are you looking for more support?
  • Are you looking to find more time?
  • Are you looking for "support" or a business partner?

Open your leader up to these conversations so that you can gauge where they are at in their business, and support them accordingly. More then than not, these questions will give you the opportunity to ask more specific ones related to their responses, which will give you an area to focus your time on together.

I hope this list has started a fire in you to start creating a questions list to use when you help support your team. Be mindful, be present, and be the best version of yourself for your people.

Creating Community

What makes your doTERRA Community unique? What are you doing to create a community that stands out? This training is going to cover on how you can create and develop a community of your own, and in turn, empower those you attract!

When I first started building my doTERRA business, I had just learned that I could. In fact, my original enroller didn't tell me that I could build a business! The mindset work I have done over the years, could have really helped me back then, but I'm going to be super honest with you. I started my business in a scarcity mindset, hoping for anyone and everyone to join me in my oil mission. I cannot tell you how wrong I was to start my business in this headspace. I have, however, learned so much from this, and that is exactly why I am sharing about this topic today!

Before I dive into creating your community, I want to share why it is a mistake to work with "just anyone". I'm going to be blunt, working with "just anyone" makes you look desperate, and people can feel the desperation seeping out of you. It takes away from your leadership capabilities, and puts you in circles of people that may otherwise take more energy to support, or people that don't have the same kind of vision for this business as you. This isn't to say that everyone needs to see things the way that you do, but each person you let into your "home" or business, is a customer that needs care or a business partner. If you have dramatically different views of where you want to take this business, therein provides a lovely new problem that... quite honestly, most leaders struggle with.

So! We nip this in the bud in the beginning, before your business is really really growing. I want you to create your ideal customer and your ideal business partner. This is going to take some time and effort from you, oh... but it is so worth it in the end! Think about the perfect person you want to enroll, and the perfect person you want to work with. Give them names. Write down what they like. *Timeout* Maybe this sounds like a silly fantasy, but I'm telling you it works! *Back to work* What do they wear? Where do they like to hang out? What do they read? Do they have children? How old are they? (No range here! Pick a specific age)

What you have done is created an "avatar" of sorts to help you call into your Community, the kind of person and people you are looking for. What this will do, is provide a basis for all members to connect on. You can also utilize these questions from Double Presidential Diamond, Hayley Hobson, to help identify the kind of community you wish to create.

  • What is your why? Why are you in business? Why are you passionate about these products?
  • What problems is your audience facing? How do you solve those problems?
  • What’s the emotional experience that you want your audience to have?

Think about it! All of these questions can apply to creating your business community, your wholesale customer community, and your prospective community. You are a powerhouse, and you can create the kind of community you want. Nothing will ever be perfect, but if you are intentional about this as you start your doTERRA business, I can promise it will only be uphill from here!

Growing your Team & Yourself

Many of us have built our business without placements from our uplines. Growing your team, is then a challenge set out for you... and of course your leaders alongside you. Within this journey of growth, things shift, things change, you will adapt, you will grow, you will move on... you will find yourself discovering things you didn't realize you had in you. Today we are going to talk about how growing yourself, has a direct impact on your team, and a direct impact on your team expanding as well.

In my own journey in this business, I have waxed and waned like the moon. I have strayed from parts of myself, and ultimately come back to myself. I'm tired of hiding my hippie-dippieness from others, and I'm at peace now with where I'm at. Continuing to learn, and to grow, is something that has always fascinated me. I remember sitting on the floor in the bookstore (in the self help section) poring over books as a tween, and it's still the first place I go to whenever I'm in a bookstore. Let's get raw and real here for a second...

Self growth is effing hard. 
It's hard.
It's work.
and most people don't want to take the time to do it.

Don't let this be you. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, that I wouldn't be where I am in this business today, if I wasn't constantly working on my mindset. Mindset work is what got me through the rough patches in my business, through difficulties in my friendships, through trying times in my marriage, through difficult days as a mom, and through moments in leadership where I have felt like I failed my community. If you are a perfectionist, I'm sure you can relate to feeling like what you are doing isn't enough. This is a feeling I have struggled with since childhood. Working on my mindset, has really helped me to squash those negative feelings and (honestly) false beliefs about myself, so that I can rise up and better serve my team.

We are in the business of serving others. Your community is there for you to serve,  and to keep on serving. If your brain is maxed out on negative crap, you're not going to show up for your people in the way they need, or maybe even at all. Remember I said that Self Growth is effing hard? That also means that this business isn't for everyone. If you aren't even willing to work on yourself, to make sure the very best version of you is showing up to serve... things are not going to pan out the way that you'd like. Just being honest with you.

So... I will share a few books with you that have helped me grow on this journey, and I hope that they support you well in yours.

Book Review: You are a badass at Making Money

After reading You are a Badass by Jen Sincero, I was so excited to learn of her writing a follow up... You are a Badass at Making Money! Today I am sharing with you some of my favorite takeaways and thoughts about this book. Much like the first book, I thought it was an easy ready with great content. If you don't like cussing, you might be distracted, but I don't think it takes away from the content at all really.

This book is all about releasing the limitations you have around money. Example, if you cringe at the title of this book... you have some issues to work out with money! Jen breaks this down, it's simple, relatable, and all about shaping your mindset around money. Each chapter has practical steps you can take, including journaling, to help you get to where you want to be with money.

Enrolling New People

Welcoming new Wholesale Customers and Wellness Advocates into your community obviously means that you need to be enrolling new people. There are a handful of things involved in this process, some of which were shared in last month's exclusive training. Today I am sharing with you the information doTERRA has put together on Perfecting your Pitch, a Daily Checklist, Following-up, and some reactivation strategies, which are all part of enrolling.

Perfecting your Pitch

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”-Benjamin Franklin

From the short snippets of time that you have with people at the supermarket to conversations you have online, as an entrepreneur you should always be ready to talk about your doTERRA business if the need arises. If you’re like most people, it’s hard to come up with the best thing to say offhand, and you usually end up saying the wrong thing instead. That’s why you need to take time to perfect how you want to talk about your business.

The concept of pitching refers to understanding what your customer or potential team member is most interested in. From there, you create a dialogue that connects with that person’s mind, heart, and gut. Usually, that person is not thinking, “Is doTERRA going to make me a lot of money?” like you might assume. Instead, the person is likely thinking, “Is doTERRA the best investment for our health I could make for me and my family?”

With that perspective in mind, know that your introduction of doTERRA (your pitch) needs to accomplish three things:

  1. It tells a clear, easy-to-repeat story.
  2. It positions doTERRA as the perfect fit for what they’re looking for with their health or income.
  3. It beats out other options they may be considering.

So, without further ado, here are some tips about how to write out and perfect your story:

  • Draft out everything you want to say. Even if you don’t end up saying everything, at least put it to paper so it’s there and you can practice it. Write both a short draft and a long draft—you will have varying amounts of time with people so it’s a good idea to have something prepared for when you only have one minute and also for longer amounts of time.
  • Have someone read over your notes and critique. Another set of eyes can help you narrow down what exactly you need to say to convey your vision in the best possible way.
  • Practice until you feel confident in what you’re saying. This may feel like over-preparation, but it really will help you nail down what to say anywhere at any time. The confidence that comes from being prepared will give you the power to be enthusiastic and excited instead of nervous, which always comes off better to any audience.

When all is said and done, our next best advice is to stay calm and ask questions. We realize that no preparation can possibly cover everything—people will ask and say things you don’t expect. Don’t allow yourself to get flustered and speak off the cuff. Instead ask clarifying questions like, “Can you explain?” or “Why do you feel that way?” This will help you direct the conversation until it’s back on track.

The Daily Checklist

Being an entrepreneur means time freedom and being your own boss, but it also means increased dedication and self-motivation. Use this short daily checklist that will help you stay on track on a day-to-day basis. Nothing you see on this list will be overly difficult to do–in fact, it may seem too simple at first. This list is meant to help you break down the task of building your business in an efficient and simple manner that won’t overwhelm you. Nothing will be more important to you in the coming weeks and months than these small actions that will lead you in the right direction towards success, however fast or slow that may be.

Following Up

Many top doTERRA leaders have said that doing follow-up is one of the simplest things you can do to help your business succeed. Yet, it’s also an easy task to let slide when you feel like you’re too busy. There are more than a few reasons why follow-up is so important, especially for the entrepreneur, the prime reason being that no one is perfect at remembering everything. People forget. As well as your class went last Wednesday, excitement fades and people will sometimes leave their oils to sit unused in a closet. Following up will help people truly incorporate the essential oils into their lives.

You also have to keep in mind that follow-up isn’t just about getting people to sign up. doTERRA is based around sharing the oils, and follow-up is just an extension of that first share with someone. Offer them more information once you find out if they have trued the oils. Make the call short but valuable for the other person. Build a relationship with them and figure out what they need. Most people fear follow-up because they don’t want to seem pushy. But, if done in the right way, a follow-up can show that you truly care about their experience. Here are some handy tips to remember when you make that call or meet with that person:

  1. Tell the person you share with that you will follow up with them later to see how their experience went. If they’re expecting to hear from you, it won’t be a surprise or an inconvenience when you call.
  2. Don’t ask yes or no questions. These types of questions tend to stop a conversation in its tracks and keep you from learning more about what the person actually needs. If it helps you, come up with some open-ended questions before the call and listen as the conversation opens up. If one question doesn’t seem to work, try a different one. (E.g. “How has using __ oil helped your family? What concerns do you have about __?)
  3. You don’t have to follow up with everyone all at once. Do what you can, a phone call here and a phone call there. Keeping these types of phone calls separate also helps you stay fresh and focus on the specific person you need to talk to instead of just focusing on getting the job done.
  4. Keep in mind that the phone is only one way to follow up. Yes, its probably the easiest way every time, but if you’re following up with anyone close by, just go over and talk to them. Some people will prefer texts over calls; make sure that you ask how they would like to be contacted when you tell them you will follow up.
  5. Keep track of your contacts and write down the date of when you first shared with them and when you followed up with them. This will help you make sure you follow up with people in a timely manner, and will help you know when would be a good time to follow up with them again if necessary.

Reactivation Strategies

If you have been building your doTERRA team for a while, you likely have some members that have simply stopped. They stopped coming to classes and meetings, and they slowly stopped ordering altogether. Meanwhile, you’re busy finding new team members and keeping your goals in mind. Sometimes you may not even know why they left. However, reactivating someone in doTERRA can be one of your more helpful strategies to help your team grow. They already liked the product at some point, and it could be a simple matter to bring them back.

Before you determine a strategy to win these people back, you need to take two steps:

Step One: Ask yourself, “Who am I trying to reactivate, and why?”

For example, you know someone hasn’t been ordering on a regular basis or that they simply have stopped keeping contact with you or your downline. But, that person could also be a key member of your team if they came back. They could help your downline to grow, or they could help you with a goal. Make it clear to yourself why they are important so that you put real effort into your reactivation campaign.

Step Two: Know why they stopped ordering or coming to classes so you can figure out how to work with them.

There could be many reasons, from a loss of interest in doTERRA because they didn’t know how to use essential oils, to concerns over cost of the product. They could have had a personal crisis and be focused elsewhere for now. You never know until you ask. To find out, you can send out a survey by email if your reactivation list is longer, or you can simply reach out to them in person and ask. Once you find out, you can then decide which of the following strategies would be best for you.

  1. Send out an email or newsletter especially for them with team updates and information about essential oils. Remind them why doTERRA is a great company to work with. This can help especially in the case of someone who just lost enthusiasm or didn’t know what to do. Make sure to have your upcoming classes listed in the email.
  2. Offer special deals when they order or come to a class. If you have the resources to do so, this can be extremely helpful. Offer a free bottle of the essential oil of your choice for an order placed before a certain date. If they were building a business, you can also offer an incentive for enrolling someone new.
  3. When you have a smaller list of people, tailor your offer to their reason for leaving specifically. If they didn’t know what to do, offer education. If they thought the product was too expensive, offer a promotion or incentive. If they had a complaint, seek to resolve it and offer your support. Personalizing your outreach could be the most effective option.

Final thoughts

I know this content may not be new to you (or maybe it is) but I couldn't find a better way to share this content. When it comes to enrolling new people, you have got to be on top of your game in these categories. It is not up to your team to build for you, it is up to YOU. So go out there, and get enrolling like a rockstar!

Placements: A how-to Guide

Placements! Oh my goodness! How often do we rack our brains over placements!? We have 14 days to place our new enrollee... and we feel like a deer in the headlights when we are looking at our back office! Fear no more! Today we are talking Placements and we are going to identify how people are will be interacting with doTERRA, when we ask them good questions!

One of the first tip-offs when it comes to placements is if the person you are moving has already indicated whether or not they will be ordering regularly on Loyalty Rewards. If they are a Wholesale Customer, you'd likely not want to place them below your third level, so that they can qualify you for your Power of 3 Bonus. If they are a Wellness Advocate, they have pretty much already indicated they have an interest in creating an income, so the questions below, are more likely suited for your Wholesale Customer.

Questions you can consider proposing to new enrollees:

  • Can you please rate your interest on a scale of 1-10 in using the products?
  • Can you please rate your interest on a scale of 1-10 in sharing doTERRA products?
  • Can you please rate your interest on a scale of 1-10 in teaching others about doTERRA products?
  • What do you see doTERRA giving you in the future?
  • Where do you see yourself in doTERRA?

Ask the kind of questions that are going to give you more insight into the person you are connecting with, so you can place them accordingly, and because YOU are their enroller, it doesn't matter where they end up... YOU should always be their PRIMARY support person. They will be supported regardless of where you place them, or how they decide to participate!

Here is a chart to give you a better idea of what to consider when placing people. In my community, we recommend as such:

Support every enrollee reach their wellness goals with their doTERRA products. Supporting their success during the first 90 days can create a lifetime customer, which can also lead to someone who regularly will host classes or even become a business builder.

You can do this! Placements don't need to be difficult. More often than not, I have looked at my tree so much, that I instantly know where I want to put someone the minute they show up under Sponsor Changes in my back office. Get your Power of 3 lined up first before anything else, and rock it from there, but helping others hit their bonuses too! You got this!

My Personal Development Routine

Personal Development, Self Care, Mental Growth... whatever you want to call it, it is vital to growing as a person, and as a business owner. I'm going to share with you a little bit more about my morning routine, how I fit my personal development into it, and what I do. Be mindful that not every day looks exactly the same, and sometimes I do rise a little later when my body needs extra rest.

The first thing I do when my eyes are opening in the morning is say a little prayer of gratitude. I am so grateful that I get to open my eyes again, so I make a point to express that gratitude. Next I grab my phone. No... not to go on social media, but to listen to my affirmations. If you want to read more about that, you can dive deeper into my post about Letting go of Negativity. Sometimes I don't even leave the bed while I'm listening to my affirmations. My husband is usually still sound asleep next to me. This is when I put Balance on my feet, to start off my day feeling grounded. (I will share more about Balance below.) When I feel like I'm ready to move on to my next activity, I get up quietly and go into our Living Room.

Here I sit down and have my quiet time alone. Sometimes I am doing a personal development workbook, sometimes it's a spiritual or bible study, and sometimes it is reading an inspirational "Self-help" book. You gotta do what works for you. Regardless, I make a point to spend this time in the quiet so that I can really focus on the content. This is also the time when I do a short yoga flow, or workout routine, meditation, crystal time, or deep breathing. From here, I also put on the first oil that comes to mind, and read about it's emotional and wellness benefits. It's so fun to see what oil I am in need of that day.

All of these things fill up my cup, and allow me to be the best version of myself for my family, and for my oil community. More often than not, this is how I get inspired with new ideas, or courses to take so that I can provide even better content overall. I don't spend money on courses that I don't feel will benefit me or my community. There are some that I want to take, but don't feel like the timing is right to jump into yet. All the same, I do feel that getting training outside of our oil community can be wildly helpful for personal development. This isn't to say that this is all you need to do to grow your business, it is only a small piece of that puzzle. You can spend all the time in the world on personal development, which is awesome, but the growth in your business comes from application and of course, working with people!

Throughout my week, I have designated time for me to finish any courses I'm taking. This can be anything from a certification course, sales training, business webinar, or a specific book. I carve out time for it, so that I am being intentional about my personal development. It is so easy for me to pour myself into my business, and into my family, that I have had to learn I need to pour myself into ME as well!

I feel like I could go on and on about what books are awesome, or which courses I think rock, but ultimately, you need to do what you feel guided to do. After all, this is your business, and nobody knows you better than YOU! The reason I'm sharing about Whisper, is because I use it in the evening while I listen to my Affirmations (yes, again!) and it really brings me to a space of gratitude. In the evening, I may spend some more time reading, or not, it all depends on how I feel. Sometimes I will do an evening meditation, if I feel like I need it, or EFT if I'm holding onto things that aren't serving me. I also have a diffuser on my nightstand, so I will just intuitively diffuse whatever I feel drawn to that evening.

That's it! I try to keep things simple with my routines, otherwise I will get very meticulous about them, and then that makes me anxious! Hopefully you have found some little clusters of value in this, and find a way to cultivate your own personal development routine!
